Shoreline
Social Skills Group
This group is built on a simple premise: social skills aren't learned sitting at a desk. Kids don’t learn how to share, handle disappointment, or navigate a conflict by staring at a clipboard or practicing a scripted role-play. They learn by doing—through movement, real interactions, natural friction, and trying again. Shoreline offers kids the freedom to navigate peer dynamics in real time, with the tailored support they need to figure it out.
Why This Group Is Outdoors (On Purpose)
We host Shoreline right on the sand at Rockaway Beach. Why?
Traditional social skills programs ask kids to sit still, suppress their energy, and talk about their feelings. For a lot of kids, especially those navigating ADHD, sensory processing differences, or social anxiety, that setup doesn't just fail to translate to real life. It actively stresses them out!
The beach environment at Rockaway isn't just a fun backdrop; it’s a core part of how we help them grow. Being outdoors:
Allows for lots of physical movement, which directly helps a child's nervous system self-regulate.
Lowers the pressure to "perform" or hit a rigid standard of quiet compliance.
Leverages "soft fascination"—the natural rhythm of ocean waves, sand, and coastal tides—which research shows recharges a child’s brain, cuts down on attention fatigue, and helps prevent emotional meltdowns.
Creates organic moments to practice teamwork, navigate a disagreement, and fix things when a plan falls apart.
Outdoors, kids don’t have to fight their own brains to participate. They can move, react, reset, and keep playing, which is exactly what real-world socialization actually requires. Outdoor play in natural environments encourages kids to navigate physical and social boundaries, which peer-reviewed evidence shows enhances self-regulation and peer conflict resolution skills. This is especially true for children with behavioral challenges, who are significantly more likely to show lasting social improvements when grouped in child-centered, outdoor settings compared to traditional indoor methods.
What makes Shoreline different
Zero worksheets
Kids are already exhausted by clipboards, behavioral token economies, and barked instructions. No desks, no dry lectures, and absolutely no artificial scripts.
Therapeutic support
Led by a clinical specialist who knows when to step back and let kids learn independently, and when to step in during the messy moments to help them pause, reset, and negotiate.
Skills that stick
Because kids are getting repeated practice with things like being flexible and accepting difficult emotions, these wins carry over to school recesses, family dinners, and weekend playdates.
